COLUMBIA, SC: The South Carolina basketball program has undergone a dramatic roster transformation this offseason, with head coach Lamont Paris rebuilding through the transfer portal and high school ranks after losing 10 scholarship players. Following four-star wing Abu Yarmah’s recent commitment, we break down where the Gamecocks’ 2025 recruiting efforts stand nationally and within the SEC.

High School Class: Developmental Foundation

South Carolina’s 2025 high school class – ranked No. 52 nationally and 15th in the SEC per On3’s industry rankings – emphasizes long-term potential over instant star power:

  • Eli Ellis (No. 68 overall): Overtime Elite MVP and elite scoring guard
  • EJ Walker (No. 182 overall): Skilled 6’8″ forward with three-level upside
  • Grant Polk (No. 242 overall): Defensive disruptor with 6’7″ frame
  • Hayden Assemian (No. 244 overall): Physical rebounder and Yarmah’s Moravian Prep teammate
  • Abu Yarmah: Unranked but athletic wing with defensive versatility

This group prioritizes frontcourt depth but trails SEC rivals in blue-chip talent.

Transfer Portal Haul: Immediate Reinforcement

Paris secured the No. 15 transfer portal class nationally, per On3, blending experience and positional flexibility:

  • Meechie Johnson (No. 325 transfer): Returning 14 PPG scorer from Ohio State
  • Christ Essandoko (No. 335 transfer): 7-foot rim protector from Providence
  • Elijah Strong (No. 320 transfer): Stretch-four who shot 38% from deep at Boston College
  • Kobe Knox (No. 408 transfer): Lockdown South Florida guard
  • Nordin Kapic (No. 489 transfer): International prospect with UC San Diego experience
  • Mike Sharavjamts (No. 189 in 2024 portal): Playmaking wing from San Francisco

These additions offset NBA Draft entrant Collin Murray-Boyles and seven portal departures.

SEC Recruiting Landscape

While South Carolina’s high school class ranks near the bottom of the SEC, its transfer portal efficiency sits behind only Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, and Auburn in conference standings. The Gamecocks retain one open scholarship, which could be used if Murray-Boyles returns or another portal target emerges.

Future Outlook

Paris’ hybrid approach balances developmental prospects with proven portal contributors – a necessity after losing 77% of last season’s production. While the 2025 class lacks headline names, the blend of young talent and veteran transfers positions South Carolina to compete in a reloaded SEC.
