SPOKANE, WA: Four-star center Sam Funches — the No. 3-ranked prospect at his position in the 2026 class — has tentatively scheduled an official visit to Gonzaga, per Sports Illustrated. The 6’10” standout from Germantown High School (Mississippi) holds 23 Division-I offers and adds momentum to the Bulldogs’ pursuit of elite frontcourt talent.
Inside the Recruitment
Funches’ visit plans spotlight Gonzaga’s growing reach in national recruiting circles. Assistant coach RJay Barsh has spearheaded the Bulldogs’ efforts, building rapport with the high-upside big man. “I can’t wait to see what it’s like over there,” Funches told On3.com. “It’s in Washington, and I hear it’s really nice.”
The Zags face competition from SEC programs, including Ole Miss, where Funches’ father, Sam Funches III, played under Rebels head coach Chris Beard during Beard’s tenure at North Texas. Funches has already visited Ole Miss, Cal, Kansas, and LSU, with trips to Mississippi State and Vanderbilt also on his schedule.
Gonzaga’s 2026 Big Board
While the Bulldogs have yet to secure a 2026 commitment, their strategy centers on high-ceiling prospects. Funches joins Tyran Stokes — the No. 1 overall recruit in the class (ESPN) — as a priority target. Stokes, a 6’7″ forward from Notre Dame High School (California), is also expected to visit Spokane.
Gonzaga’s developmental track record for big men, highlighted by NBA talents like Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme, remains a key selling point. Funches averaged 12.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks as a sophomore, showcasing the rim protection and offensive versatility the Zags covet.

What’s Next for Gonzaga?
Head coach Mark Few‘s staff continues balancing immediate needs (via the transfer portal) with long-term recruiting wins. Securing a visit from Funches signals Gonzaga’s viability in high-stakes battles, but closing against SEC rivals will require emphasizing player development and recent postseason success. With Stokes also in play, the Zags’ 2026 class could anchor their next championship-contending roster.
