Bryce Underwood Michigan Debut Shows Elite Poise in 34-17 Victory
According to The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast, Bryce Underwood’s Michigan debut demonstrated exceptional composure as the true freshman led the Wolverines to a 34-17 victory over New Mexico. However, Klatt noted the defense “probably not” played as well as they would want, while praising Underwood’s individual performance as “excellent.”
The Joel Klatt Show emphasized Underwood’s mental readiness for the moment. “I thought he was poised. I thought that that this stage is not going to be too big for him. He was not afraid to make big throws,” Klatt observed. Furthermore, the freshman quarterback completed 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown.

Klatt specifically highlighted Underwood’s situational awareness, particularly “right before the half in a two-minute situation right down the field.” Additionally, this performance marked a significant upgrade from last season. “Let’s face it, like that was a lot better than Michigan had a year ago at the quarterback position,” Klatt stated.
Moreover, Underwood’s running ability remained untapped in this contest. “He didn’t even really have to show us his ability to run. And that’s something that I think will be a real threat and a plus for him as the season goes on,” according to Klatt’s analysis.
Looking ahead, Klatt sees substantial potential but acknowledges upcoming challenges. “I think this ceiling could be really high. There are still things that we need to see in particular when the competition ramps up, which it will this week.” Consequently, Underwood faces his next test on the road against Oklahoma, similar to Arch Manning’s recent road debut experience. Ultimately, Klatt believes “this team, I think, quietly has some confidence now with this quarterback and his ability to throw the football down the field that maybe they can make some waves in the Big 10 and and around the country.”
