SPRINGFIELD, VA: According to SI.com, Florida State commit and Marcis Ponder High School Basketball prospect has emerged as the centerpiece of Gillion Academy’s inaugural season, leading the nation in rebounds with 17 per game while powering the first-year prep program to elite status among top national programs.
Dominant Interior Force Anchors New National Power
The 7-foot Class of 2026 center has transformed Gillion Academy into an immediate contender during their debut season. Additionally, Ponder earned Game MVP honors at the Big Bob Classic in Alexandria City, posting 18 points and 13 rebounds in a 75-73 victory over Archbishop Carroll on December 13. Furthermore, his physical dominance was evident against elite competition at the City of Palms Classic, where he recorded 12 points and 16 rebounds versus Montverde Academy and 17 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks against CIA-Bella Vista.
However, the road to elite status wasn’t always clear for the Liberty City native. As an eighth grader, Ponder weighed 350 pounds at 6-foot-8 and struggled with basic basketball fundamentals. Meanwhile, assistant coach Jonathan Patrick Gajardo noted his early limitations.
“He was massive at about 6-foot-8 and 350 pounds. He was 13, 14 years old and looked like an NFL defensive lineman. He had no athleticism, terrible footwork, little hand-eye coordination and couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time.”
From Liberty City Projects to Marcis Ponder High School Basketball Stardom
The transformation from raw prospect to elite recruit showcases remarkable dedication and coaching development. Therefore, after struggles at Overtime Elite as a sophomore, Ponder returned to Florida weighing 320 pounds before committing to serious conditioning work. As a result, he dropped to 290 pounds by his junior season and became one of the country’s top big men.

Head coach Kenny Gillion emphasized Ponder’s evolution beyond physical development. Still, the prospect’s character remained consistent throughout his journey from the Scott Homes housing projects.
“Marcis led the country in blocked shots and rebounds last year. He knows there’s nothing wrong with dominating on the inside even when everybody wants to shoot three’s nowadays.”
Elite Competition and Championship Aspirations
Currently, Gillion Academy operates from an 18,000-square-foot facility in Springfield, Virginia, housing six basketball courts, classrooms, and training facilities. Because of their immediate success, the Lions compete against premier national programs while targeting McDonald’s All-American recognition for Ponder and qualification for the postseason Chipotle Nationals tournament.
