Inside the Recruitment

Ament’s commitment follows a rapid rise from relative obscurity to becoming one of the most coveted prospects in his class. His standout performances at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship (where he earned gold with Team USA) and his growth into a positionless, 6-foot-10 playmaker solidified his status as a projected top-five NBA draft pick. Barnes’ pitch centered on replicating his success with Kevin Durant, emphasizing Ament’s potential as a one-and-done talent.

“Coach Barnes sees me as a one-and-done type player,” Ament said. “He has done it before with Kevin Durant. I trust the coaches to help me get to the next level.”

Program Priorities

SEC contender. The Volunteers added transfers Ja’Kobi Gillespie (Maryland) and Jaylen Carey (Vanderbilt) while retaining key contributors like Felix Okpara. Ament’s versatility as a floor-spacing scorer and switchable defender aligns with Barnes’ vision of positionless basketball.

“I feel like we’ll be a national championship team,” Ament said. “The coaches plan to use me as an offensive weapon and develop my defense. They don’t assign me a position—they see me as just a player.”

Ament’s commitment underscores Tennessee’s ability to attract elite talent through player development and strategic roster construction. With his unique skillset and the Volunteers’ depth, Knoxville now eyes its first NCAA title.
